Grab and Go Breakfast

A new program will also be "greeting" students as they return to school this year – a breakfast grab and go program, "The Fueling Station...for Students on the Go!"  Through a grant opportunity with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and Action for Healthy Kids, attractive breakfast carts were purchased and will be strategically placed at school sites for students to "grab and go" breakfast as they depart their school buses, vehicles, or are dropped off by their parents.  We believe more students will have the opportunity to participate in the school breakfast program and are excited about the possibilities!  With increased participation, students will realize an academic advantage at the beginning of the school year as we endeavor to help them lay the foundation for sound nutrition habits and prepare for optimal academic performance and attendance.

Attached are two photos of the "program in action" from Chiefland Elementary School's Open House last evening.  Also attached is a sample of the signage that will be placed at each school site with coordinating school colors.

The breakfast carts will also be a vital wellness "vehicle" to educate our students about the importance of a nutritionally sound breakfast via "demonstration" – if we can't bring the kids to the cafeteria, we'll bring the cafeteria to the kids!  Preparing our students through adequate nutrition will help improve their academic performance, preparing them for standardized testing sooner, rather than later.  School nutrition staff will pack breakfast meals (hot and cold) that will be picked up from the breakfast cart, placed in a designated, high traffic area.  Working with the school site Food Service Manager, the process for "Grab and Go" will be determined by each school's administration.  Please help us support this program and encourage your students to stop by "The Fueling Station...for Students on the Go!"

Food, Nutrition and Wellness is also proud to announce their new web site at  A work in progress (which I hope to update this weekend!), we hope it will be a helpful tool for parents and students to check daily breakfast and lunch menus.  In addition to conveniently accessing school menus virtually anywhere via on-line, email, or smartphone services, Nutrislice also has the capability of using digital signage to help get the message out to students about nutrition and wellness tips.  Test tasting software will also be available in the future for survey purposes to help assess student preferences as well as the incorporation of nutrition and caloric content of the foods served.  We encourage everyone to check it out!

Menus for August will be posted this weekend...stay tuned.

The continued support of faculty, staff, parents, and community is vital to our food service program and students – "Levy County Students, Our Focus, Our Hope, Our Legacy!"
